First up, Senate Bill 1249 in Congress would redefine navigable airspace and give states and private property owners control over the first 200 feet above ground.
This bill also imposes mandatory standoff distances from structures, including 200′ laterally and 50 feet over the top of structures. Unfortunately, this isn’t a new concept. Five years ago, you were already fighting a similar proposal by the Uniform Law Commission (or ULC) that eventually got rejected.
This idea is concerning and is proposed by US Senator Mike Lee from Utah, who has a reputation for presenting bills that could restrict UAS operations.
Please contact your senators and representatives, as this impacts ALL UAS operators, including drones, model airplanes, FPV, and helicopters.
Following this, there’s news for recreational flyers at the Academy of Model Aeronautics, or AMA, club sites. The AMA announced they’ve obtained National Authorization, allowing members to fly at designated club sites within Class G airspace above the standard 400-foot Above Ground Level, or AGL, limit for typical flying. Depending on site specifics and assessment within Class G, the new authorized altitude limit could go up to 700 feet AGL, or even 1,200 feet AGL. However, this isn’t automatic for every site. Clubs need to secure a copy of this specific authorization and ensure they meet all the outlined criteria before members can start flying higher.
Third up, DJI broadens its enterprise payload lineup with two new accessories aimed at public safety and inspection users. They’ve introduced the Zenmuse S1 Spotlight and Zenmuse V1 Speaker. The S1 Spotlight is tailored for the Matrice 300 RTK and Matrice 350 RTK platforms. It’s a high-power light source with a max illumination range of up to 150 meters, or about 492 feet. It features adjustable brightness levels and can sync its angle with the gimbal’s pitch movements, keeping the light fixed on where the camera is directed, which is pretty impressive. Then there’s the Zenmuse V1 Speaker, which you can use with the Matrice 300 and 350 series drones. It’s not your typical Bluetooth speaker; it offers a max volume of 120 decibels with an effective range of 100 meters, or 328 feet, at a more conventional 75 decibels. It supports text-to-speech conversion, audio storage, and real-time playback, proving valuable for broadcasting instructions or warnings during emergencies.
Lastly this week, ParaZero has released the SafeAir M4 parachute recovery system, specifically crafted for the DJI Matrice 4 series drones. According to ParaZero’s press release, the SafeAir M4 adheres to the ASTM F3322-22 standard for parachutes utilized in Operations Over People, or OOP.
