Due to Ukrainian drone attacks, flights have been temporarily suspended at three Moscow international airports – Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky – as per Rosaviatsia’s Artyom Korenyako on Telegram.
“Airports are temporarily not accepting or sending flights,” the agency mentioned.
During this incident, the Russian Defense Ministry’s air defense forces countered an attack by 19 Ukrainian drones from multiple directions targeting Moscow, as reported by the city’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin. Emergency services are responding at the site of the impacted debris.
Rosaviatsia indicated that the “Carpet” plan was activated at several main airports.
“To ensure the safety of civil flights, temporary restrictions were enacted at 00:57 Moscow time for Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports,” the statement detailed.
Sheremetyevo Airport later faced temporary restrictions as well.
105 Ukrainian drones were intercepted over Russian regions overnight on May 6, the Russian Defense Ministry announced via Telegram.
“From 21:00 to 04:00, air defense systems on alert destroyed and intercepted 105 Ukrainian UAVs,” their message stated.
Specifically, 32 UAVs were downed over Bryansk region, 22 over Voronezh region, 19 over Moscow region, and another 10 in Penza region.
Furthermore, air defenses eliminated nine drones over Kaluga Region, six over Belgorod Region, two UAVs over Lipetsk and Samara Regions, and one drone over Vladimir, Kursk, and Rostov Regions.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported debris falling on Kashirskoye Highway without serious damage or casualties. However, some sources indicate a drone damaged a residential building’s windows and a store.
Flights were temporarily suspended at 13 airports due to the attacks, including in Moscow. A Nesma Airlines flight from Hurghada had a prolonged delay in St. Petersburg due to lack of supplies and refueling challenges.
On May 5, Russian air defenses shot down 123 Ukrainian drones in a single day, along with destroying four JDAM-guided bombs and four HIMARS rockets.
